More about the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2

March 16, 2013

I’ve been getting tons of good e-mails and comments, and questions about the Lenovo article so I thought I’d follow up with a few more things.

CNET just named the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 the best of the atom-powered windows tablets. Their article is a nice comparison of all the competitors:

[Update 3/18] Laptop Magazine April print edition just named Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 their Editors’ Choice for Windows 8 tablets (beating the Surface Pro by the way).

Windows 8 Landscape

I received a number of comments to the effect “shouldn’t we just get one of the larger hybrids”, so I refer you to my previous article about the Windows 8 landscape:

The Lenovo Keyboard

A few have asked me about the $119 optional keyboard that was designed by Lenovo to go with this tablet (whether I’d tested it, liked it, etc.). Yes, I have it and it works quite well. However it is thicker and heavier than the corresponding Surface Type keyboard, so it is a bit disappointing in that way. But it props up the tablet nicely and has a good feel.

The Lenovo Sleeve

There is an optional case that Lenovo makes to hold both the keyboard and the tablet. I tried it and did not like it:

It’s way too thick and overpriced.

Instead I got the following case which is thinner, cheaper, and lighter, and it holds both items:

Just a word of warning if you buy the Tablet directly from Lenovo. At least in France, the sales service is disastrous. They provide you no useful information about the date at which the product will be shipped; there is no one to answer calls. I know they have my money. I do not know whether I will receive a tablet!

Being an early adoptor of Lenovo’s ThinkPad Tablet (Android version) I have to say it has been more than adequate fulfilling my primary requirement to replace my paper notebooks. One are that I have been very unsatisfied has been performance, lack of quality apps and most of all its build quality. My issues have been Rear Facing Camera Failure, case splitting in slight drops and the most recent being the internal power switch breaking off the circuit board.

You dont mention if you tried the original thinkpad but can you comment on your opinion of the quality of the ThinkPad Tablet 2?

Stewart, no, I didn’t try the original. The ThinkPad Tablet 2 seems pretty solid. I had one problem with the keyboard: the switch would not work to turn it off. I contacted Lenovo and they did a free swap for me (where they sent a new one and a pre-paid package to send the old one back). I was pretty happy with that service (I did not tell them I was an author). And I am having one problem with the actual unit: the unit turns itself back on for a moment right after you turn it off. A bunch of people mentioned it in the lenovo blogs. And occasionally it seems to turn itself on when I grab it out of the sleeve. I suspect the windows button is getting hit on that, but not sure. And finally, you have to make sure you run the Lenovo update tool after you get a new unit shipped to you, because it ships with the original buggy build. But no, I’d say I am delighted with the quality. Hope that info helps, Michael

I have TPT2 and I also purchased the ThinkPad VGA adapter for connecting to projectors. My PowerPoint remote/pointer when connected to the USB port gets detected and works fine, but the moment I connect the VGA adapter to the TPT2 the USB port stops working. I can’t seem to use the remote/laser pointer once I connect the VGA adapter. I even tried connecting from the hdmi port, but I faced the same problem. Is there any solution to this ? I just want to use the remote while presenting my PowerPoint presentations.
